Bathspace explores the bath typology and the state of the public recreation building in the city today. It draws upon historical and regional context and utilizes qualities of post-industrial Minneapolis to challenge notions of how a foreign program may fit into the daily social life of Dinkytown, a university neighborhood. In the winter city of Minneapolis, indoor public space is crucial to the functioning of the city for most of the year. 
Bathspace proposes an extension of the community indoors, perhaps to provide a new non-commercial public program in contrast to the ever commercializing area. It’s an intervention that is rooted in its regional site and the activist spirit of the local population.

The project studies both the history and ever evolving current demographics of the neighborhood and region to propose an intervention that is at once rooted in the deep heritage of the area and positioned toward the new. Once a bastion of bohemian anti-corporatism, like many college adjacent neighborhoods in the U.S., Dinkytown has undergone a revitlization that has created a myriad of generic environments, Bathspace rejects the notion of an ‘either-or’ urbanism to propose a future-facing community zone.&#38;nbsp;

The intervention suggests a porous open floor that extends the circulation of the street into the interior. The triangular extents of the site become the driver of the form, at once the project is situated at the streetcorner but also angled and positioned toward the downtown skyline in the distance. The escavated mass is then suspended above the site acting as a solid void which grounds the project. Voids and extrusions throughout the building help build the relationship of the intervention with its surrounding context by showcasing the sounds of the city, visual glimpses of surrounding activity, views of the downtown skyline, and the sounds of the interior spaces, allowing the visitor both a personal experience and an understanding of their position within the larger urban and regional context. The structure made up of concrete slabs and columns, as well as beams that carry the spans between large open spaces, is meant to evoke the rougness of the urban context. 
Openings in the mass allow for views and as well as bike and people circulation that tie the common spaces together. The blue circulation diagram highlights the three main people circulation zones: the promenade, leading to the baths, the stair and elevator core leading to the solid mass and private zones, and the tower, leading to the sauna and viewing platform. The bike path runs through the building, providing a complimentary program back to the city. Diagrammatic model studies showcase the circulation and ground plane and how it relates to the surrounding street.

The site is situated at a crossroads between several different zoning regions of the neighborhood. The University of Minnesota campus to the South is bounded by University Avenue. The Dinkytown commercial district is situated at the center of the site, which spills out into a mostly single-family home and multi-family apartment building neighborhood. Storage rail lines and an industrial corridor which also included the Dinkytown Greenway, a city-wide bike path network, cuts through diagonally across the site, creating the unique shape. Other industrial sites nearby make this area a unique but complex site. Studies were conducted on view corridors, density, and massing at the start of the design process.&#38;nbsp;

Bathspace examines the cultural forces that are key to the development of DInkytown and also proposes a larger commentary on the state of urban public space in the United States. The bath house in American culture has very different connotations and origins than foreign counterparts. Often linked to the counter culture and bohemian lifestyles of the post-war era, the bathouse is one of the key defining social spaces of American history but is often overlooked. Bathspace proposes a new connotation for the space, one rooted in a citizen driven fight for more accessible public space. The front space of the bathhouse functions as a free to enter, non commercial space, providing seating, warmth and views to the outside street, with open programming it functions as an interior extension of the street.&#38;nbsp;
A Study of New York’s New Museum, Public Parks in New York, and the Dinkytown Protests of the 1970s were instrumental in the development of the urban living room concept.&#38;nbsp;

The element of duration is examined through a range of spaces from the long durational private baths, to the public pools which may be accessed for shorter durations, to the lobby, a space that may act as a thoroughfare and a shortcut across the city block. The bike tunnel serves the public street as a connection point from the corner to the Dinkytown greenway below, offering a quick glimpse of the inner workings of the bath and acting as an infrastructural element to the city.

Scale Up envisions a collection of diverse, yet integrated parts, a series of studios, galleries, and other art production spaces playing upon the existing non-hierarchical site aspects of this lot south of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The intervention proposes an anchor to the South side of the campus. This counters the monolithic  structures by proposing a collection of smaller buildings under a flexible circulation space covered by a skin, a steel and ETFE panel enclosure that assembles the ‘kit of parts’ into a single distinct institution building.

The proposal suggests that art and public space have a symbiotic relationship that is vital to each other’s effectiveness. Seasonally, the building changes character, as the boundary between outside and inside is in flux from winter, where the building can take on an opaque demeanor with a clear interior boundary to the summer when the enclosure skin appears to be a light canopy, and programs filter out effortlessly into the surrounding landscape.

The enclosure exists as a cohesive element tying all of the smaller buildings together under an indoor and outdoor canopy of urban space. The smaller building parts provide a series of spaces of varying proportion, materiality, and position that provide a backdrop to the production of art that may suggest new opportunities to the artist. Rather than ignoring the intervention’s position and context and reinforcing Koolhaas’ suggestion, each sub-building features openings to the outside and within the interstitial public space indoors, allowing program to spill out. It also provides a visual preview for passerby of the activity inside. It counters the qualities of the other campus structures which turn themselves away from the neighborhood. It produces opportunities for flexible inside-outside spaces, and regulates day-lighting, and entry. A few elements perforate through the skin, including a tower, oriented towards the city as a relationship between the village scale of the surrounding eclectic neighborhood, the institution of the school and museum, and the city beyond.

	The intervention’s programming is derived from a serious of studies on circulation, density and opacity, landscape, and temporal zones. Main paths across the site inform the connection between the outer urban street and the campus, creating two primary walk through zones. The density of the building massing itself increases from one side of the intervention to the other, where spaces become more compact, stacked, and opaque. Landscape features are added to tie spaces together and break up opaque massing. Temporal zones throughout the project are “non-rooms” where temporary activity can come alive, it’s where the street enters the project and impromptu performances can occur.&#38;nbsp;

Copenhagen, Denmark&#38;nbsp;DIS Abroad Professional Studio (Studio 04)&#38;nbsp;Critic: Marie-Louise Holst2016, 2018Afloat examines the European Migration Crisis in the context of Nørrebro Copenhagen. It proposes a micro apartment building housing students and asylum seekers attempting to provide a future for new migrants in the city and develop a youth culture that can be supportive of the population, all to build a surrounding community that is more accommodating. Afloat proposes a project that counters the refugee camp model in hopes of integrating newcomers directly in their neighborhoods and introducing dignity to their housing situations.&#38;nbsp;

The project hopes to initiate new ideas about appropriately scaled solutions to this massive global issue specifically tailored for dense cities, that can be more personalized, and help better connect migrants to natives in established European cities.

	The European Migration crisis is an enormous issue for the continent’s cities and towns, as many people from war torn countries seek safety and better living conditions. Issues of racism and xenophobia have plagued Copenhagen like many cities. There has been a difficulty introducing the local population to people who often come from different cultures and speak different languages. The intervention proposes an opportunity to integrate these populations into the existing community in a way that fosters mutual understanding and learning. Norrebro, the location of the site, is the most internationally diverse neighborhood in the city, it is already home to many immigrants from a variety of countries and its many cultural institutions and public spaces reflect this diversity.&#38;nbsp;

The intervention is made up of two membranes, a metal panel facade that serves as an outer membrane, a screen for interior courtyards and balconies, that filters the light to the interior membrane, and an inner membrane of walls of curtain wall glass that provide views to other parts of the building and the outside. The outer membrane features operable louvers which allow for variation of light quality in the building creating a dynamic facade, displaying the personality and life of the building, and contrasting the monolithic surrounding context of traditional stone apartment buildings and mid-century housing blocks. Courtyards and balconies cut in between the micro apartment units to introduce light into the center of the building and allow residents to see each other in semi-public zones that become interesting moments of interaction across levels. The lobby is fully transparent to the surrounding community and serves as a center for the neighborhood, providing greater public functionality and interaction with the street. Students and asylum seekers utilize the same spaces and work together to build a safe zone.

Independent Project&#38;nbsp;
Based on: Scale Up! Institution as Village2017 - 2018Bus Stop, Block Party, expands on Scale Up by examining the residential scale’s connection to urban infrastructure. In a primarily residential neighborhood of Whittier, Minneapolis, Scale Down proposes an infill infrastructure project, using spaces in between existing residential structures, while breaking down traditional notions of property lines and zoning. It envisions an infrastructure that moves beyond the utilitarian bus shelter. By extending the bus shelter into the urban block and into the space between two existing turn-of-the-century apartment buildings, Scale Down serves as a interstitial space to activate a connection between a local neighborhood street and the main street of the bus route. It reveals an urban theater: gathering and event spaces for use between a large urban street and a quiet residential road. The intervention is constructed from materials that can be easily disassembled and reassembled in other locations and configurations to fit different infill conditions across the neighborhood. The project exhibits how Infrastructure can be linked to the institutions in a neighborhood, introducing satellite programming that can enhance the relationship between various stakeholders. It also suggests that infrastructure can change due to the needs of the neighborhood and be a participatory driving force in the creation of the city. Ultimately it interrogates the very notion of ownership in the city and proposes that infrastructure can be community initiated and playful, much like a neighborhood Block Party.

As part of a competition hosted by the New York City Department of City Planning and the Municipal Art Society of New York, I designed a logo for privately owned public spaces, a key asset in the city’s push for more open and active urban spaces. The logo takes hints from the graphic language of the subway’s wayfinding system to provide a systematic approach to identifying and highlighting these spaces and their availability to the public. Beyond the competition, I formulated a brand package that would work beyond the entrance logo to create a more holistic identity for the spaces, while allowing the architecture to remain intact.

2016Copenhagen’s Fredens Park sits on the banks of the Copenhagen Lakes, a system of historic artificial waterways that define the medieval inner urban core from the outskirt neighborhoods like Norrebro and Osterbro. Situated next to a high traffic road and surrounded by a complex of hospital buildings, the park is poorly designed and programmed, appearing deserted and uninviting. The Kulturhuset or “Culture House” is a critical part of Danish Culture, particular in urban areas, where communities and neighborhoods often come together to plan and build these community centers which are free to the public and provide a variety of programming for the immediate area and city as a whole. The intervention KulturHuset Fredens Park proposes a culture house for all ages that combines indoor and outdoor programming in a seamless space that captures the variety of contexts of the local area.&#38;nbsp;

	Fredens Park sits at one of the busiest road intersections in this section of the city, 7 lanes of traffic converge at a 4 street intersection, an unusually high volume of car traffic for a city like Copenhagen. The center of activity of the neighborhood is very much concentrated on this intersection. It’s loud and unwelcoming, so the intervention proposes shifting the activity away from the street intersection and inward, into the center of the park, connecting the main intersection with a smaller neighborhood street. At the center of this is a new market space which becomes the feature point of the site.&#38;nbsp;
There are three converging landscapes that surround the site, the lawn of the existing park and lake; the forested tree canopy of the park adjacent to the site; and the urban streetscape of the intersection and street. The market at the center becomes the collection point for these three zones. The form of the three buildings of the culture house is created by lifting each of these three zones, opening toward the main market space. This provides interior program space that relates to the outdoor activities.&#38;nbsp;

The collection of three different landscapes converging at the zone provide a wealth of programming. The lawn which extends over the roof allows for outdoor recreational activities like football, volleyball, and other lawn sports as well as a garden and cafe that opens up to the garden. The building below the lawn provides space for a dance and performance flex space. The forest scape surrounds a building that features seating, classroom, and workshops spaces. The streetscape building provides a basketball court and spectator seating. The market and central space allow for flexible outdoor programming such as a farmers market, stage for performances, and general open space. The position of the pedestrian space away from the street allows for safety and a respite from the chaotic nature of the urban area.&#38;nbsp;

As architects, we would never claim to be experts in any aspect of the project other than architecture. We can talk to the creation of built form, though, and how it should reflect our best hopes for the future and our values as a society. Public housing in any of its forms should reflect values of equality, inclusion, community and environment. As an overarching idea, this basic building type exists to enrich the human spirit of both the individual and also the larger community. The resultant architecture must be unique, interesting, imaginative. It must inspire its inhabitants in some way. Projects must be integrated into the city fabric and not pushed out to the edges. These buildings should foster social interaction and will have hybrid programs to add other integrated uses.&#38;nbsp;
Our entry for the competition starts with a look at the spaces immediately outside of the affordable housing units. In this fantastical rendering, possible programming from performance spaces, athletic rooms, gardens, and public areas comes to the forefront contrasting with the historical modernist examples of urban and affordable housing in the rear. The project proposes how housing can start to create new opportunities for more whimsical uses of urban space.&#38;nbsp;

Into The Water explores the relationship of the building’s site, the East River Flats Park at the University of Minnesota situated on the banks of the Mississippi River with the
complexities of the program, a recreation center tying the University with the natural landscape of the banks. A series of articulated artificial hardscape lines are cut across
the landscape with pieces of the landscape pulled up or down or stretched to accommodate

different programs and amenities. The density of hardscape, rigidity of circulation, and defined programs are reduced approaching the river allowing for flexibility. Interactions
between these different layers allow for a cross-polinization of activities. The project thorougly explored physical and ephemeral elements of site to provide the foundation for the design.&#38;nbsp;

The research process started with a thorough investigation of the site, the banks of the Mississippi River at the University of Minnesota, which is part of a protected wildlife refuge and national river and recreation area. We observed how the site changed through the Spring and Winter seasons, as the banks of the river change form and mass with ice sheets that are constantly in flux. We collected samples of natural materials founded on the site to inform how we might think about materiality. The study of these fragments of the site provided the foundation for the concept. “Fragments of the building break off from the main space and spread across the site as they approach the riverbank. This creates a main building and smaller cell buildings which allow for more flexible programming.&#38;nbsp;
